Why did no one let the man stay. After the bishop let the man stay why did he tell the bishop about his criminal record. Why doesn't the man believe that the bishop is giving him a place to stay. The man smiled every time the bishop called him "sir." From that you can tell he was miss treated for a long time and a small kind gesture towards him makes his day.

LES MIS BK 2 CH 2

 Based on the name of chapter 2 I know that the chapter is going to be about the bishop. Monseigneur has been trying to convince the bishop to lock his doors. Monseigneur tells the bishop to at least stop say "Come in" when someone knocks because he doesn't know if their intentions are bad.
